ROGER ROBERTS – A CHILDHOOD CRUSHED

In the care of London County Council

This memoir A Childhood Crushed tells the story of growing up in state care at a time when the authorities enforced a little known and misunderstood 75-year rule that unintentionally prevented children from ever publishing the truth about their own lives. Consequently, many of my generation died or were too ill to ever access their records. At 81, I finally obtained my full case files and became one of the very few able to tell this story first-hand. This book is not an old man’s complaint, but a rare testimony from a silenced generation – a record of what really happened to children in care during an era the public still knows almost nothing about.
