With warmer temperatures and longer days, May is when gardens really start to come to life. After months of preparation, plants begin to grow quickly and outdoor spaces become places to relax and enjoy. It’s also an important time to plant summer favourites and keep an eye on plant health as the growing season gathers pace.

Horticultural experts at Cherry Lane Garden Centres have rounded up the key gardening jobs for May, helping gardeners make the most of the improving weather while preparing their gardens for a colourful summer ahead.

Here are the top jobs for the garden this May:

  1. Plant up hanging baskets

“May is the perfect time to plant up hanging baskets with colourful summer favourites such as petunias, fuchsias and geraniums. Keep newly planted baskets in a sheltered spot for a short period to help them establish before placing them outside where they’ll enjoy plenty of sunshine.”

  1. Sow French and climbing beans

“Warmer soil temperatures in May make it an ideal time to sow French beans and climbing beans directly into the ground. Choose a sunny, sheltered position and ensure the soil is well prepared and enriched with compost to support strong growth.”

  1. Plant your bedding now the frosts have finished

“With the risk of frost largely behind us, May is the time to plant out bedding plants. Varieties such as begonias, marigolds and petunias will quickly add colour to borders, pots and containers, helping gardens look vibrant heading into summer.”

  1. Check plants for pests and diseases and treat where needed

“As temperatures rise, pests such as aphids and slugs become more active. Regularly check plants for signs of damage or disease and act quickly if needed. Removing affected leaves early or treating infestations promptly helps keep plants healthy.”

  1. Repot and feed houseplants

“Houseplants begin to grow more actively in May, which makes it a good time to repot those that have outgrown their containers. Fresh compost and a gentle feed will provide the nutrients plants need to thrive during the warmer months.”

  1. Add plants to garden ponds to help the wildlife thrive

“Adding aquatic plants to ponds in May helps create a balanced ecosystem. Plants provide shelter for wildlife, improve water quality and help prevent excessive algae growth by absorbing nutrients.”

  1. Plant out dahlia and canna tubers

“Once the danger of frost has passed, dahlia and canna tubers can be planted out into the garden. Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil and these plants will reward you with bold, colourful blooms throughout the summer.”

  1. Add interest to your shady border with ferns and hostas

“Shadier areas of the garden can still be full of interest. Ferns and hostas thrive in lower light conditions and add texture and lush greenery, helping create depth and contrast in borders.”
