By Pablo Lloyd OBE, adviser, speaker and author of The FT Guide to Business Ethics (Pearson)
After decades in business, most leaders understand that success is rarely as simple as it first appears. Profit matters. Performance matters. But so does conscience.
For Pablo Lloyd OBE, author of The FT Guide to Business Ethics, now advising boards and leaders after a career spanning founder, Chair, CEO and CFO roles, experience has reinforced one lesson: ethical leadership is not optional.
Looking back across his career—from training in the City during the deregulation of the 1980s to co-founding educational organisations that have helped four million people unlock their potential—Lloyd has witnessed both principled leadership and costly failure.
“When you’ve seen both good and bad leadership, you realise shortcuts rarely end well,” he reflects. “Ethics is about having the courage to apply your conscience when it matters.”
In an era of constant scrutiny, ethical leaders bring perspective. They understand reputational fragility. They appreciate long-term consequences. And they recognise that culture, once damaged, is difficult to rebuild.
Artificial intelligence presents a new challenge. While technology evolves rapidly, judgement remains human. “AI doesn’t come with a moral compass,” Pablo says. “We have to provide one.”
For ethical leaders, Pablo sees a a responsibility to mentor or challenge emerging leaders in principled decision-making. Business power is significant, sometimes rivaling that of entire nations. With that power comes influence over communities, employees and the wider economy.
His advice is not dramatic. It is deliberate. Decide what you stand for. Build environments where people can speak honestly. Align incentives with long-term values. Use influence responsibly.
Experience and exposure to ethical leadership sharpens ethical awareness. And in today’s business climate, that awareness may be one of the most valuable assets a leader possesses.
TOP TIPS FOR BUSINESSES
Ethics is not abstract. According to Pablo Lloyd OBE, there are practical steps any organisation can take immediately to improve its ethical health and strengthen performance.
- Define What You Truly Care About
Leadership teams should explicitly agree on the values and behaviours that guide decisions beyond profit. Without clarity, culture drifts. - Review Incentives and Metrics
If short-term gains are rewarded without considering impact, behaviour will reflect that. Align bonuses and targets with sustainable outcomes. - Strengthen Speak-Up Systems
Employees often see issues before leaders do. Create safe, credible channels for raising concerns without fear of retaliation. - Apply Ethical Guardrails to AI and Technology
Before deploying AI or automation, ask structured questions about purpose, risk, accountability and safety. - Lead by Example
Policies and frameworks matter, but behaviour matters more. Ethical culture is shaped by what leaders consistently model.Ethical leadership is not about avoiding headlines. It is about building organisations that perform and endure. As Pablo puts it, success is about profit and principles.
