Blue Lotus: An idyllic coastal setting a three-hour drive south of Bangkok
Thailand is now a very viable option for seniors to escape the UK winter for between 30 and 90 days at a time.
Especially with Blue Lotus Wellbeing’s active senior living retreat now open. It is located just south of Hua Hin, a three-hour drive from Bangkok and situated on the beach front in Pranburi in 20 acres of beautifully kept seafront gardens facing the Gulf of Thailand.
Some 38 apartments in the peaceful gardens at the Wyndham Hua Hin Pranburi Resort & Villas have been fully refurbished by Blue Lotus Wellbeing to provide supported living for elderly guests staying 30 days or longer.
Specially-trained staff are on hand to provide person-centred special needs support.
Seafront relaxation at any time
Thailand is an Increasingly compelling option
“At a time when health care for the elderly in many European countries is stretched or declining, the entire financial and quality of care package that Thailand offers is increasingly compelling,” says Paul Dean, a stakeholder in the Blue Lotus Wellbeing initiative.
The focus at Blue Lotus in Pranburi is on ‘active senior living’ which places an emphasis on holistic wellbeing.
Guests have the option of activities such as daily exercise classes, including tai chi, water aerobics, yoga, as well as cookery classes, plus nearby golf, hiking and sailing. Or simple relaxation in a full service resort setting.
“It’s a preventative health approach to positive living with optional medical oversight, all designed to encourage long-term wellbeing via exercise, good nutrition and engaging activities,” says Dean.
“Assisted senior living in Pranburi is the meeting of hospitality and healthcare – areas that Thailand excels at.”
Optional wellbeing activities such as Tai Chi
Support for elderly is in place
Physical infrastructure has been added to match a unique customer care ethos at the retreat. The 38 refurbished apartments now feature safety rails, wheelchair access, widened doorways, emergency call buttons and repurposed bathrooms.
Guests can avail themselves of optional wellness checks at local clinics and international-standard hospitals, facilitated by Blue Lotus staff.
Supportive environments
Blue Lotus says that the campus in Pranburi is a good fit for guests who live independently but want a break from daily responsibilities, are exploring supportive environments for later life, would benefit from structure, companionship, or rest, enjoy nature, culture, or quiet connection, or want to try something new in a beautiful setting.
The food, the warmth and the Thais’ innate and natural respect for the elderly are all positive factors. So is finance.
Easy rhythms each day
Affordable
The active senior living campus costs a fraction of what would be expected in the UK. For example, 48 square-metre Garden Studios cost £44 (THB1,867) per night based on a minimum 30-night stay. Additional support packages can be added, depending on personalised needs, which are always discussed first.
Early-stage dementia support – if required
Blue Lotus in Pranburi also has capacity to accept a few guests with early-stage dementia. Care standards for early-stage dementia guests are guided by the specialist Blue Lotus Wellbeing senior living and dementia care medical staff from Bangkok.
Extra care provision is always available
The Blue Lotus ethos
Guests are welcomed as individuals, not patients. Every detail, from design to daily rhythm is shaped by attentiveness, warmth, and respect. Guests are not rushed. Plans are flexible.
Assistance is always offered with calm and clarity. This is not about managing needs. It is about
restoring ease, confidence, and connection.
The Thai values of Kreng Jai run define the experience. This cultural principle encourages quiet sensitivity, generosity, and care for others. It shows in the way staff listen and in the unspoken rhythms of each day.
Is it right for me?
Of course, choosing to live in Thailand for months at a time is quite a big step. Thankfully Blue Lotus has created a very user-friendly resource-rich website where people can find out more.
For example, there are lots of resources about the Blue Lotus philosophy, location, personalised care needs, early-stage dementia, visas, transport, local hospitals, costs – including comparative costs around the UK – the role of family and referrers, support for families, and much more.
