After building a lifetime of skills and experience, many of us find ourselves at a remarkable point in life – a period of reflection and new beginnings. We’ve dedicated decades to our careers, raised families, and navigated life’s many triumphs and challenges. Now, as you look ahead, a question often arises: what’s next? What is a meaningful way to spend your time, to continue learning, and to pass on the wisdom you’ve accumulated?

For many, the answer lies not in a new job, but in a new purpose. A chance to connect with a younger generation, to share their knowledge, and to leave a lasting legacy. This is where a volunteer opportunity with Action Tutoring can provide the perfect answer.

Action Tutoring is a national education charity committed to a simple, yet profound, mission: to ensure that no child’s potential is limited by their background. We provide free maths and English tutoring to pupils facing disadvantage, and we are looking for individuals like you to help us.

Every day across the UK, there are thousands of bright young people who, through no fault of their own, are falling behind at school. They may lack the access to additional support that other children take for granted, and this can lead to a quiet erosion of their confidence.

The sad reality is that the attainment gap is not a talent gap. It’s an opportunity gap. These children have just as much potential; they just need someone to help them unlock it. This is where you come in.

As an Action Tutoring volunteer, you’ll work with a small group of one to three pupils in Year 5 or 6, or in Year 7, 10, or 11. The commitment is flexible, requiring just one hour a week for up to 20 weeks. You choose the day and time that fits, and whether you prefer to tutor in-person at a local school or conveniently from the comfort of your own home via our online platform.

We are looking for individuals with subject knowledge in maths or English, whether that comes from a degree, a previous qualification, or simply a lifetime of practical application. The key is a clear, patient approach and a genuine commitment to supporting a young person’s progress. You’ll use our expertly crafted tutor workbooks to guide your pupils through structured activities designed to rebuild their confidence and boost their grades.

The question that often comes to mind for many considering this is: Do I have the skills? Do I have the time? As Janet, a retired tutor from London, shared:

“To someone considering volunteering with Action Tutoring, I’d say give it a go – you don’t need to be a subject expert or a former teacher. The training and resources guide you through everything, and the sessions are very structured. As for time, even one hour a week can make a real difference. Volunteering has sharpened my own thinking and communication skills, and it’s reminded me how valuable one-to-one support can be. It’s also helped me feel connected to younger generations.”

But the biggest reward of all? Seeing the difference you make with your own eyes. As another volunteer, Wendy, discovered:

“It’s all those skills that you’ve developed over the years, they just automatically kick in. I think that’s one of the most exciting parts about it, really. And you’re making a difference. And you’re seeing the impact. I started in January and the two boys I’m tutoring have had two sets of mocks since then, and they’ve improved. You can see the results straight away.”

To ensure you feel fully prepared, we will provide you with everything you need. This includes comprehensive induction training, all the tutor workbooks you’ll use in your sessions, and ongoing support from our team. We also handle the logistics, covering your travel expenses (up to £5 per session) and providing a free DBS check.

This volunteer role is perfect for you if you are passionate about helping young people succeed, particularly those facing disadvantage. Join us this year and help a child build the confidence they need for a bright future.
