Top tips to getting the most out of Big Energy Saving Week

It’s Big Energy Saving Week from 21st– 27th January 2019 and the UK government will be raising awareness on how to cut energy bills and make homes energy efficient. Read on to find out how you can go green with MiHome and save money.

Why is energy saving important?

With recent statistics from the Fraunhofer Institute, citing that by using smart home products you can save up to 40% of heating costs, it’s no wonder that 40% of MiHome users surveyed in December 2018 said they buy MiHome smart home products to save energy in their home.

45% of energy usage is attributable to heating

With the largest amount (45%) of energy usage in the home attributed to heating, the first step to a more energy efficient smart home is by investing in a cost-effective, easy-to-install smart thermostat such as the MiHome Thermostat. A smart thermostat is a fundamental part of any energy management system because a home’s heating and cooling system is one of the biggest energy consumers in the house. The MiHome Thermostat is voice compatible with Alexa and Google Home, can be controlled remotely via the MiHome app or using on-board controls to adjust temperature and turn the thermostat on/off. Timers to adjust the temperature to come on/off at particular times and geofencing so you can control your heating to come on when you are a particular distance from home can be used so that you can adjust your heating to your needs and save energy at the same time.

Make energy savings of 30%

To achieve energy efficiency in every room, smart radiator valves such as Alexa-compatible MiHome’s Smart Radiator Valves can be used throughout your house. Zonal heating means you can match heating supply to demand in specific parts of your home at different times of day and by driving the energy savings via individual radiators you can also achieve significant cost savings. Through the MiHome app you can also at your convenience, remotely manage your heating, changing the time and temperature of your valves by room if you decide you are using too much heating. By retrofitting smart radiator valves in your home, The Carbon Trust estimates you can make energy and carbon savings of around 30%. Compatible with the MiHome Thermostat and Nest Learning Thermostat, MiHome’s easy-to-install Smart Radiator Valves can transform the energy efficiency of your home.

Automate and save energy

Perhaps the most energy-efficient home would be one where all the appliances and devices work on their own without the need for a user to intervene. By using PIR you can get one step closer to achieving this. By using PIR and motion sensors such as MiHome Wireless Open/Closed Sensor combined with other MiHome energy saving devices such as heating and lighting products, you can use this sensor to trigger your appliances to activate automatically such as switching the light on when the front door opens, adding even more convenience to your lifestyle and of course energy-savings for your home.
