Grandparents’ Day – A Cause For Celebration
Has anybody ever heard of Grandparents’ day before? Didn’t think so. Unlike Mother’s Day, and Father’s day, Grandparents’ day passes by relatively uncelebrated in the UK. The impetus for a National Grandparents Day originated with Marian McQuade, a housewife in Fayette County, West Virginia, USA. Her motivation was to champion the cause of lonely elderly and encourage younger generations to seek guidance from previous generations.
The celebration was introduced in the UK by the charity Age Concern in 1990 and is celebrated on the first Sunday in October. This year it falls on October 2nd, and is the perfect excuse for a celebration.
For grandparents, this day is even more of an excuse to get the whole family together and enjoy some quality time. Looking through old family albums and playing games with little ones or going to the park for a picnic can be a great way to create lasting memories.
For grandchildren, Grandparents’ Day is a great opportunity to make a special hand-made card for that special grandparent, or choose a special gift. Online retailer, Chums have recently started promoting Grandparents’ day with a really fun infographic offering ideas on how to celebrate. One of their gift suggestions is gardening gear which would perfect for starting your own allotment; a great way to keep active and grow your own vegetables at the same time!
Whether you are a proud grandparent, expectant a grandparent or simply the friend of a grandparent, it’s easy to appreciate the importance of this coveted family role. For some, providing emergency care solutions to busy parents is the primary function. For others, simply spoiling grandchildren on the odd occasion is the only responsibility. Both are equally important, and are well worth celebrating!
